Maybe, from the headline, you already know what fruit we are talking about . It’s seasonal, sweet, and very affordable. And in addition to hydrating, it helps us lose weight . We refer to the melon.
More than 90% of this fruit is made up of water , so it keeps us hydrated for hours. Plus, it’s packed with vitamins A and C, and carotenoids and antioxidants.
The melon, which we can find in supermarkets like Mercadona for less than 2 euros for 1/2 piece, is also very healthy and affordable. About two servings of this fruit provide 25% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A, which is essential for the skin, eyes, and immune system.
Also, each serving of cantaloupe provides half of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C , as well as small doses of zinc, potassium, magnesium, iron and calcium. Vitamin C, as we already know, is essential for the immune system, helps in the production of collagen, and reduces the damaging effects of oxidative stress on cells and tissues. In addition, this vitamin plays a fundamental role in brain health.
That is, we can safely say that melon is one of the most recommended fruits for this summer . And, in addition, it helps you lose weight. We’ll tell you then.
Melon, an ideal fruit for summer if we want to lose weight
Many people fear fruits when they want to lose weight, because they are afraid that the natural sugar they contain (fructose) will prevent them from meeting their weight goal. However – and although it is true that some fruits are not recommended if we are taking care of ourselves – melon is quite diuretic.
In fact, a serving of melon provides only 47 calories and contains, in addition to the vitamins mentioned, many antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin , essential to protect us – especially the eyes – from oxidative cell damage.
Returning to calories, the melon has less even than an apple (96) and a peach (57). Although any of these three fruits is ideal for weight loss, the melon, as we have seen, has a large amount of water (90%), and the consumption of this has been linked to significant weight loss for years. Also, drinking water burns calories (23 calories per pint). In other words, if you drink this amount of water a day for a year – either directly or through fruits – you will be burning 17,000 calories or, in other words, you will lose 2 kilos of fat just with this small daily gesture.
If you want to lose weight this summer, we recommend taking melon in the morning and before meals, as it will satiate you for hours and accelerate your weight loss process.
If you want to lose fat: grapefruit
Although fruits, in general, help you lose weight because they have few calories (compared to other foods), grapefruit is the one that contributes the most to making you lose fat .
This has been shown by numerous studies, such as this one , which followed the weight and metabolic factors, such as insulin secretion , of 100 men and women for 12 weeks.
The participants were divided into three groups: one ate half a grapefruit with each meal ; another drank grapefruit juice three times a day; and the rest were given a placebo. Outcome? On average, those in group 1 (ate half a grapefruit) and those in 2 (drank juice) lost between 1.6 and 1.5 kilos , while those in the third group (had consumed a placebo) only lost 0.3 kilos. Be careful, this on average, because there were participants in the first two groups who lost up to 5 kilos .
This research thus pointed out that there is a physiological link between grapefruit and insulin , and that this affects body weight. Experts believe that the chemical properties of grapefruit reduce the insulin level of those who consume it, thus stimulating weight loss .
If you want to eat grapefruit to lose weight , or ideally take it before meals or for at least six weeks.
